A brief look at  Nationalparkregion Hohe Tauern Osttirol

The Nationalparkregion Hohe Tauern Osttirol is part of the national park Hohe Tauern, the biggest reserve of Central Europe and the Alps. 610 of the total area of 1.800 square kilometres are situated in Eastern Tyrol. Part of the holiday region are the valleys: Iseltal (with the villages Matrei in Osttirol/Huben and St. Johann im Walde, 5.200 inhabitants), Virgental (with the villages Virgen, Prägraten am Großvenediger; 3.400 inhabitants), and Defereggental (with the villages St. Jakob, St. Veit und Hopfgarten; 2.640 inhabitants) – each valley is a distinctive piece of Austria with unspoiled nature. Situated in the midst of the austrian Alps, the terrain of the national park region runs south of the Hohe Tauern from the Riesenfernergruppe and the Venedigergruppe to the Großglockner, which is Austria’s highest mountain with 3.798 metres. Far from mass tourism one can find multifaceted holiday offers for every age and taste in an intact landscape. In summertime, hiking, trekking, tennis, fishing, horseback riding, swimming and mountainbiking make for an ideal holiday mix. Adventurer can push the envelope by climbing, rafting, canyoning or kayaking. In the winter sportsmen find excellent conditions for ski touring and snowboarding because of the well-tended cross-country ski runs and slopes.
